Game 1 - Caps 4 Bruins 1

So what’s not to like? Very close to a complete game by the Caps.

Special teams dominated - one shot on 5 power plays for the Bruins - Steckel, in particular was a PK force.

Two PP goals by Brooks Laich.

Ovechkin was in mid-season form (2 goals, 1 assist, 5 SOG, cleaned out Recchi) - I still don’t know how he put the second goal in - and I’m guessing neither does Milan Lucic.

BB rolls the dice a bit and loads the front line with all the skill guys: OV-Backstrom-Semin, and puts the grinders on the second line; Laich-Morrison-Knuble. The strategy pays off as all of the scoring comes from PP and line 1.

A very solid game from Theo.

After a largely even first period, the Caps just out-skated the Bruins for the duration. If their intent was to send a message to the rest of the conference; mission accomplished.

Period 2 - Caps 2-0

All Caps. No beginning of season drought for OV. As he buries the puck on a nice passing play abetted by a sloppy B’s line change. The Bruins lose their cool as the period closes w/ Charra taking a retaliation penalty against OV.

Bad period for Jurcina - a terrible cross-ice pass gets picked off to create an opportunity and he takes an unnecessary holding call.

Theo looking good thru 2 periods.

Period 1 - Caps 1-0

Caps on a power play goal from Laich - surprised to see him out there instead of Knuble. Don’t mess with success?

Two bad penalties by the Caps - Green’s offensive zone tripping to negate a PP was particularly repugnant. Erskine grabs a stick (while stickless himself) with the whole stadium watching him. Vendors out in the concourse could have called that one.

Knuble gave up an opportunity from the (right?!) boards but drew a penalty minutes later from the same spot.

Versus TV promo: “We talk with Sydney Crosby about his rivalry with Alex Ovechkin.” Really? Twenty minutes into the season and we’re whipping out the Crosby card? That’s the best you got?
